the Mission

My mission is to transform sport and the performing arts by centring athlete welfare, driving culture change, and equipping coaches, leaders, and organisations with the tools to build safer, more inclusive, and high-performing environments.

Through consultancy, education and advocacy - grounded in the principles of Squad Safe - we empower the sport and performing arts communities to lead with integrity, prioritise wellbeing, and create spaces where young people can truly thrive.

Joey Gamper Cuthbert

Bestselling Author, International Speaker

and Safeguarding Advocate

Joey Gamper Cuthbert is a bestselling author, international speaker and trusted voice in athlete welfare, safeguarding and culture change.

A former dancer, athlete and coach, Joey brings a deep understanding of the transformative power of sport and the performing arts, alongside a clear-eyed commitment to making these environments safer, healthier and more empowering for everyone involved.

Her work sits at the intersection of safeguarding, athlete welfare, learning and development, governance and organisational culture. She is passionate about moving safeguarding beyond policies and compliance, helping organisations create cultures where people can thrive, perform and feel safe.

Through her consultancy, Squad Safe, Joey works with organisations across sport and the performing arts, from grassroots programmes and clubs to governing bodies, major events and established organisations. Her work includes strategic consultancy, safeguarding and organisational transformation, policy and framework development, leadership and coach education, CPD and training, keynote speaking, workshops and hands-on support for culture change.

Joey's experience spans cheerleading, dance, gymnastics, youth sport, professional and international sporting organisations, major events and the wider performing arts. She has worked with organisations in the UK and internationally, bringing practical expertise shaped by both professional experience and a deep understanding of the realities faced by athletes, dancers, coaches, leaders and organisations.

She is also the author of Squad Safe: A Practical Guide to Athlete Welfare and Culture Change in Cheerleading, which was shortlisted as a finalist in the Business Book Awards 2026. The book reflects her wider mission: to challenge outdated approaches to safeguarding and explore what it takes to create genuinely healthy, high-performing cultures.

Whether she's delivering a keynote, designing a learning programme, advising an organisation on safeguarding strategy, supporting leaders through cultural change or developing practical tools for coaches and practitioners, Joey brings clarity, challenge and practical solutions grounded in lived experience and industry insight.

Her work is ultimately about more than safeguarding. It's about creating environments where people can do their best work, athletes can perform at their best, and organisations can build cultures that are safe, healthy and built to last.
